CONDITIONALS
Zero Conditional
If+Present Simple+Present Simple
If we heat ice, it melts.
The zero conditional is used to make statements about the real world, and often refers to general truths, such as scientific facts.
First Conditional
If+Present Simple+will+infinitive
If Peter works hard,he will pass all his exams.
The first conditional is used to express a possible condition and a possible result in the future.
Modal Verbs
Modal verbs are followed by a bare infinitive(infinitive without to). The subject and the modal verbs change position to form questions and negatives are formed by adding not.
CAN
This modal verb is used:
a) to express general ability in the present (Sadie can swim.)
b)to express possibility in the future (It can rain tonight.)
c)to express permission/prohibition (Can I go to Sam's party, mom?/ You cannot bring dogs in school.)
COULD
This modal verb is used:
a) to express general ability in the past (I could swim when I was 5.)
b) in polite questions and request (Could you pass me the pen, please?)
c)to express weak possibility in the future (It could snow next week.)
